Teachers

Teachers have a difficult task educating children in a group situation. The task is made even more difficult as 1 in 6 children in Australia currently have learning challenges. Please read section on Learning Difficulties.

If any of the children in your class, exhibit the following symptoms and behaviour, it is highly likely that they have retained primitive reflexes (see Learning difficulties) and would benefit from your use of Brain Gym in the classroom:

Pre-school children:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Constantly moving
  • Impulsive behaviour
  • Poor coordination
  • Cannot remember simple instructions
  • Walks on Toes
  • Sits with legs in a W shape on the floor
  • Poor sense of balance
  • Lethargic
  • Shy
  • Will not speak in unfamiliar situations
  • Sensitive to loud, sudden sounds

School children:

  • Poor concentration
  • Poor writing skills
  • Leans on desk when writing
  • Wraps feet around chair
  • Speech is unclear
  • Reading Problems
  • Sensitive to light and/or sound
  • Problems copying things from the board
  • Prefers to lie down on the floor when doing work.
  • Pokes tongue out when carrying out a task.

This behaviour is neurological and requires a neurological solution.

Using Brain gym can give you a calm, focussed class in minutes (see section on Brain Gym).

What we need in the classroom, is “wholebrain learning”, which means that we want all parts of the brain functioning. For wholebrian learning to occur there are 3 dimensions which must be switched on: Focus, Centering and Laterality.

The Focus dimensions gives us the ability to Particpate, comprehend and concentrate. When this dimension is switched off, we go into survival, become reactive and can’t think or concentrate.

The Centering dimension enables us to organise our thoughts and feelings and also organise things around us. When this dimension is switched off we become very emotional, and unable to organise ourselves. We forget things and don’t know where to start.

The laterality dimension enables us to communicate. When this is switched off we find if difficult to express ourselves.

How can Brain Gym Help?

There are specific brain gym exercises for each of the dimensions above. They are very simple and only take a minute to carry out. The result is immediate. So if you observe that the class is not concentrating, then a few Focus exercises from brain gym, will have them concentrating in minutes.

The importance of water:

Research has revealed that the main reason for lack of focus in the classroom is dehydration. A 5% drop in hydration is enough to make it impossible for a child to focus on a page.

Stress, soft drinks, cordial, tea and coffee, contribute to the dehydration of our students.

Introducing a water bottle or water breaks, will make a huge difference to the performance of your students.
